| 1,000,000,000,000 | Trillion |
| 1,000,000,000,000,000 | Quadrillion |

**British vs. American Number Words**

In the UK, "billion" traditionally meant one million million (10^12). Today, the short scale (US system, where billion = 10^9) is internationally standard and used by default. Toggle to "British long scale" if needed for historical documents.

**When Is Writing Numbers in Words Required?**

*Cheques/Checks* — Legal requirement. The word form controls over the numeric form in case of discrepancy.

*Legal documents* — Contracts and deeds often spell out monetary amounts to prevent alteration.

*Academic style guides* — AP Style requires writing out numbers one through nine in text. Chicago Style recommends one through one hundred.

*Formal reports* — Financial statements and board reports often write key figures in full.
