How It Works

Enter your assignment scores and their weightings. Optionally enter the final exam weight to calculate what score you need on the final to achieve your target grade.

**Grade Calculator — Know Where You Stand (and What You Need)**

Staying on top of your course grade throughout the semester is crucial for academic success. Our Grade Calculator lets you track your current weighted grade and calculate exactly what score you need on upcoming assignments or the final exam to reach your target grade.

**How Weighted Grades Work**

Most courses weight different components differently:

Example:
- Homework: 20% weight, you scored 85%
- Midterm Exam: 30% weight, you scored 78%
- Final Exam: 50% weight, score TBD

Current grade (without final) = (85 × 20 + 78 × 30) / 50 = 81%

**What Do I Need on the Final?**

Using the formula:

Final Score Needed = (Target Grade – Current Grade × (1 – Final Weight)) / Final Weight

If target is 90% and current weighted grade is 81% with a 50% final:
Final Score Needed = (90 – 81 × 0.5) / 0.5 = (90 – 40.5) / 0.5 = 99%

**Grade Scale Reference**

| Grade | Standard % | GPA Points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100% | 4.0 |
| A | 93–96% | 4.0 |
| A- | 90–92% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87–89% | 3.3 |
| B | 83–86% | 3.0 |
| B- | 80–82% | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77–79% | 2.3 |
| C | 73–76% | 2.0 |

**Strategic Exam Preparation**

Knowing exactly what you need on the final allows strategic preparation:
- If you need a 60%: Focus on your weakest areas only.
- If you need a 90%+: Comprehensive study is required.
- If you need 100%+: Your target grade may be out of reach — consider adjusting your target.

**Extra Credit**

If your course offers extra credit, enter it as a separate category with its weight to see how it affects your overall grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply each component's percentage score by its weight (as a decimal), then sum all the results. Example: 85% × 0.20 + 90% × 0.30 + 80% × 0.50 = 83%.
Some courses drop the lowest grade or allow extra credit, which can shift weights. The calculator handles non-100% totals and normalises accordingly.
Enter your remaining assignments as separate items with their respective weights. The calculator shows your required average across all remaining work.
Your target grade is mathematically out of reach given your current scores. You can adjust your target grade to something achievable.
